Research Fellow, Coordinator, Design for Health (DFH)
Amanda Johnson's work for the DFH project focused on creating model ordinances, drafting comprehensive-plan language, developing the Web site, building its Resource Library, and directly working with the community-funding recipients on creating healthier cities via design thresholds. She brought with her an interest in bridging the gap between academic research and the priorities of both the private and public sectors.
Prior to joining the Metropolitan Design Center, Johnson was a research assistant to Dr. Ann Markusen, director of the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the Humphrey Institute, University of Minnesota. The work focused on occupation approaches to understanding arts-related economic development by studying such topics as artists' centers and the development crossover between the nonprofit, for-profit, and community-art sectors. She is also co-author of the Artists' Centers: Evolution and Impact on Careers, Neighborhoods, and Economies.
Johnson is a Ph.D. candidate for City and Regional Planning, School of Design, University of Pennsylvania. She holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning, Hubert H. Humphrey Institute, University of Minnesota, and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, International Studies, Northwestern University.
